About Graduate Research in Nursing...

The focus of this journal is to publish original nursing research and other scholarly work by graduate students in nursing in a timely, easy-to-read, and accessible manner.

Students at masters, doctoral and post-doctoral levels are encouraged to submit articles and papers which they do not intend to, or have not been able to, publish in the traditional nursing research journals.  Well written class papers with information that would be useful to other graduate students in nursing are suitable as are research proposals, abstracts and research project reports.  If you have any questions about what you can submit, contact the editor.

It is hoped that GRN's relatively simple submission process will facilitate the sharing of work, and that seeing their work online and receiving feedback will encourage students to venture further and attempt submission of other work to the more traditional nursing research journals.  We encourage instructors to include submission to GRN as a course requirement for their students.

GRN's sister publication on-line, Research for Nursing Practice, will publish research from the nursing practice setting. Between these two journals, we hope to disseminate more of the nursing research that is not currently being shared with the world.

Although we maintain and encourage high quality standards and expectations, our focus in GRN  is not so much on the research process itself, - except in the case of methodology papers, -  as on research findings and their usefulness to nurses and graduate students in nursing.

Call for Submissions

GRN is inviting submissions of original research and other scholarly work for publication on-line in (but not limited to) the following forms:
  • Full articles: 10 - 15 pages double spaced, not including references and illustrations
  • Research briefs: 3 - 4 pages double spaced, not including references and illustrations
  • Case presentations: 1 - 3 pages plus no more than 3 references and no more than one illustration
  • Abstracts: 1 - 2 pages plus no more than 5 references and no illustrations
Submissions should not have been published before nor should they be submitted simultaneously elsewhere. Podium or poster presentations are not considered publication unless an abstract was printed in a set of proceedings.  If so, permission to publish the same abstract should be obtained from the publisher of the proceedings.

Submitted work should conform to the suggested formats outlined on the submission formats page, if possible. If the suggested format does not fit well with your article, or if you have an article ready in another format, you may submit it and we will consider it anyway, with some editing possible.

We will publish as many articles as possible in each issue. Authors may be contacted for clarification and editorial changes, but peer review will occur on-line after publication.

Manuscripts should be written in Word, Word Perfect or text format (Sorry, no Mac format at this time) and should conform to APA style.

Submissions should be sent either in the body of an email, as an attachment (text format), - the least preferred -, or on a 3.5 inch diskette to: Graduate Research LLC, 2917 East Manchester Drive, Tucson, Arizona, 85716.

Hard copy manuscripts (i.e. on paper) will not be accepted for publication and will not be returned to the author.  To avoid disappointment, do not send hard copy manuscripts, please.

Inquiries may be sent via email to the editor or call (520) 318-9946 during normal business hours (Mountain Standard Time).

All submissions will be acknowledged by e-mail.  Authors may be contacted for clarification and editorial changes, but peer review will occur on-line after publication.

Accepted manuscripts will become the property of Graduate Research in Nursing and Graduate Research LLC. All authors must sign a Copyright Transfer and Warranty Agreement which must accompany the submission.  This does not mean that you give up your right to any future developments based on the manuscript.

In their submission, all authors must disclose any interest (commercial or financial) they may have in any product or service that is the subject of their study.  They must aslo disclose the source of any support or funding (monetary or material) they have received for the study

Peer Review and Interactive Learning

To shorten and simplify the publication process, peer review will take place on-line through email and bulletin boards. Students, faculty and nurses as a whole are encouraged to participate in the review process through questions, comments, and suggestions for authors.  This process will help our graduate students in their development of new nursing knowledge.

On-line peer review and feedback will promote interaction over research findings and will bring the relevance of research into sharper focus in the lives of graduate students, as well as practicing nurses.

In addition to tables and graphic depictions of results, authors are free to submit their data (within limitations of space) in a separate file, or note that data are available for other researchers to share.  The latter is recommended to avoid copyright complications.

Acceptance for Publication

The number of articles published each month will depend on how many are submitted. Clearly, we want to publish as much graduate student work as possible. It is our intention to encourage, not limit the dissemination of findings to the world of nursing.  Therefore, most, if not all suitable work submitted will be published.  Authors will be notified be email within 5 days if their work is not accepted.

To take advantage of the new closeness made possible by the World Wide Web, articles from all parts of the world are welcomed, but must be submitted in English.
